چکیده

Somatic growth functions are critical parameters for understanding the life history of a species and for developing management plans for wild populations. Substantial effort has been invested in—and considerable information on growth rates has been gained from—mark-recapture studies of sea turtle populations (Chaloupka and Limpus, 1997; Chaloupka and Musick, 1997; Limpus and Chaloupka, 1997; Bjorndal et al., 2000). Although growth studies based on mark and recapture of individual animals yield direct measures of growth rates, sea turtles have characteristics that make them relatively poor candidates for mark-recapture studies. Sea turtles are relatively slow growing; consequently mark-recapture studies are long-term labor-intensive efforts. The probability of recapturing marked individuals is low in many populations because of the long-range movements and obscure migratory patterns in some lifestages (e.g. posthatchlings in a pelagic habitat), high natural mortality in young lifestages, and high human-induced mortality in juvenile and adult lifestages. Blood analytes of oceanic-juvenile loggerhead sea turtles (Caretta caretta) from Azorean waters: reference intervals, size-relevant correlations and comparisons to neritic loggerheads from western Atlantic coastal waters

Blood analyte reference intervals are scarce for immature life stages of the loggerhead sea turtle (Caretta caretta). The objectives of this study were to (1) document reference intervals of packed cell volume (PCV) and 20 plasma chemistry analytes from wild oceanic-juvenile stage loggerhead turtles from Azorean waters, (2) investigate correlations with body size (minimum straight carapace leng...

Temporal, spatial, and body size effects on growth rates of loggerhead sea turtles (Caretta caretta) in the Northwest Atlantic

In response to a call from the US National Research Council for research programs to combine their data to improve sea turtle population assessments, we analyzed somatic growth data for Northwest Atlantic (NWA) loggerhead sea turtles (Caretta caretta) from 10 research programs. We assessed growth dynamics over wide ranges of geography (9–33 N latitude), time (1978–2012), and body size (35.4–103...

Estimates of survival probabilities for oceanic-stage loggerhead sea turtles (Caretta caretta) in the North Atlantic

Estimates of instantaneous mortality rates (Z) and annual appar ent survival probabilities (Φ) were generated from catch-curve analyses for oceanic-stage juvenile loggerheads (Caretta caretta) in the waters of the Azores. Two age distributions were analyzed: the “total sample” of 1600 log gerheads primarily captured by sight ing and dipnetting from a variety of vessels in the Azores between ...

First satellite tracks of neonate sea turtles redefine the ‘lost years’ oceanic niche

Few at-sea behavioural data exist for oceanic-stage neonate sea turtles, a life-stage commonly referred to as the sea turtle 'lost years'. Historically, the long-term tracking of small, fast-growing organisms in the open ocean was logistically or technologically impossible. Here, we provide the first long-term satellite tracks of neonate sea turtles. Loggerheads (Caretta caretta) were remotely ...

Reference intervals for plasma biochemical and hematologic measures in loggerhead sea turtles (Caretta caretta) from Moreton Bay, Australia.

Biochemical and hematologic reference intervals have been reported for loggerhead sea turtles (Caretta caretta, Linnaeus 1758), but low sample numbers and simple statistical analyses have constrained their diagnostic usefulness. During June 2007-May 2008, 101 loggerhead sea turtles in Moreton Bay, Queensland, Australia, were captured by hand from boats; clinically assessed to determine health s...
